Mom's Chocolate Syrup

I suspect Mom originally got this recipe off the Hershey's Cocoa box, but it's always been a trusted companion for ice cream in our family. Here, I offer a spin of my own:

1 cup cocoa
1-1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup dark corn syrup (or, in a pinch, maple syrup or pancake syrup or white syrup)
1 cup water, hot
2 teaspoons vanilla
optional add-ins: 1/4 cup rum or teaspoon chili powder

In a large saucepan, use a whisk to mix the dry ingredients well. Add the wet ingredients. Mix well, using a slotted spoon to break up any lumps. Boil 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and cool 10 minutes. Makes about 1 pint.
